Deodorants:
of good quality or problems?

That it or not is wanted, the aureoles of perspiration under the arms and the odors of sweat put to us quite simply badly at ease. The fact that to perspire is a vital function for the organization changes nothing there. Nobody can escape perspiration, especially not when the sun types extremely, but what is essential us, it is that nobody sees it or realisedoes not realize from there. This is why we give each other much evil to suppress our perspiration and to cover with them the emanations by other perfumes. For that we use deodorants, and there are really the embarrassment of the choice.

Which is the good deodorant?
Among the deodorants, the specialists differentiate the antitranspirants from the deodorants.

  1. The antitranspirants are products which prevent that sweat does not bead on the surface of the skin. Aluminum salts, for example, block the glands sudoripares.
  2. The deodorants act according to a different principle. Knowing that the purpose of the unpleasant odors appear when sweat breaks up, the deodorant is to block this process thanks to products which declare the war with the bacteria responsible for this decomposition. In complement, odorous oils will cover the odor. One currently finds under the deodorant „term “, of the combinations of active agents slowing down sudation and deodorant active agents.

The deodorants exist in various forms: with ball, out of stick or spray.

  1. The roll-on deodorants and the sticks generally have the same composition. Only consistency changes: liquid for one, in form hardened for the other.
  2. The sprays are very simple preparations. And certain manufacturers go the task more than easy (see the comparisons of products “the last word or the wind? ”)

Questioned: Synthetic aluminum compounds
The synthetic compounds of aluminum and certain bactericidal substances that the deodorants of conventional industry contain belong to the particularly problematic ingredients.

• The complexes aluminum-chlorine and the sulfates employed in many conventional deodorants prevent sweat from beading on the surface of the skin of which they block the pores. But to stop the pores can involve itchings and irritations of the skin.

• When one perspires, the bacteria which involve the unpleasant odor of sweat come into play. To destroy them, the great ways should be employed. The process is effective but doubtful on the medical level. The triclosan (a highly reactive chlorinated substance) belonged to these killers of bacteria. These chemicals are classified in the category of the allergens of contact but its potential of dangerosity is well to beyond: one suspects the triclosan of modifying the genetic capital; it attacks the natural microflora of the skin; in the experiments on animals, it damages the liver and the kidneys of the guinea-pigs.

• It is comprehensible that one finds in the deodorants of the components being used as conservatives in other products since, in both cases, the objective is to kill out of the bacteria. The more one deodorant fights intensively against the bacteria, the less the odor of perspiration develops. But from the point of view of health, the use of some of these ingredients is extremely doubtful.

• In the conventional formulations of deodorants, one finds also components present in the creams. It is the case of problematic antioxydants like the BHA and the BHT, or of the polluting raw materials like the EDTA or silicones. In a deodorant, the silicone addition or paraffins has especially a technical function: they allow a better distribution of aluminum salts.

You will find information on the problematic cosmetic components by deferring you to data bank INCI and while clicking in the left-hand column on the articles “Substances at the risks” and “the concervation”.

What are there in the natural cosmetic deodorants and bios?
In the natural cosmetic deodorants, there are no aluminum salts of synthesis. The only mineral raw materials possibly used are the alums.

Alum (declaration INCI: Potassium Alum) is a crystalline powder obtained starting from an alum-bearing clay or schists. It limits sudation but it is a very soft product which does not attack the skin and does not make fear an irritation of the skin due to the obstruction of the pores. The alum is chemically inert. I.e. that it does not release from aluminum. The situation is quite different aluminum hydrochlorates.
Other average natural to fight against perspiration:

• Farnesol. This very invaluable component of essential oils costing very expensive, it is often replaced by the identical “natural” substance corresponding. The farnesol feels the lily of the valley and contributes to suppress the bacteria which break up sweat.

• The triéthylcitrate that one finds for example in the juices of morello cherries. As an active agent of the deodorants it avoids the formation of the odors of perspiration and form a durable deposit of active agents.

• Essential oils. In the certified deodorants, almost always a mixture of essential oils acting on the odor of perspiration and masking it is.

• Extracts of plants. Certain extracts of plants (of melissa or hop, for example) contribute to stop the germ formation. Others like the sage extract limit sudation.

• The éthylhexylglycérine and Polyglyceryl-3 Caprylate. The purpose of these components are to prevent the proliferation of the bacteria at the origin of the odors of perspiration.

Effectiveness of the natural deodorants or bios
To tell the truth and in general, the natural deodorants are not as powerful as certain conventional deodorants, the latter blocking the phenomenon of perspiration by the presence of aluminum salts. But they are not therefore ineffective.
They manage very well to limit perspiration and to cover the odors during a few hours. According to the tests carried out, a good natural deodorant acts over one approximately 8 hours period, amount of time during which the odor which emerges from the armpits remains perceived like pleasant.
Some time ago, I received an email of a reader of this site which complained that the deodorant bio which she had just tested did not feel really good. There however exists a great choice of perfumes in the pallet of the offered products. If a perfume displeases to you, while seeking well will surely find you another more with your taste.
Each product presents a combination of active agents different, and it is only by testing a deodorant that you will be able to really determine the effectiveness of it.
